Our Beliefs

At River City Church, our beliefs are rooted in Scripture, aligned with historic Christian teachings of the Bible, and centered on Jesus Christ. Below is a summary of our core beliefs, each grounded in God's Word.

We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • Deuteronomy 6:4 – "Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one."
  • Matthew 28:19 – "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
  • 2 Corinthians 13:14 – "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all."
Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, sacrificial death, bodily resurrection, ascension into heaven, and future return.
  • John 1:14 – "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us."
  • Hebrews 4:15 – "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin."
  • 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 – "Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day."
We believe the Holy Spirit indwells believers, empowering them to live godly lives, equipping them with spiritual gifts, and guiding them into all truth.
  • John 14:26 – "But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you."
  • Romans 8:11 – "And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then he who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through his Spirit who lives in you."
  • 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 – "A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person for the common good. To one is given a message of wisdom through the Spirit, to another, a message of knowledge by the same Spirit, to another, faith by the same Spirit, to another, gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another, the performing of miracles, to another, prophecy, to another, distinguishing between spirits, to another, different kinds of tongues, to another, interpretation of tongues. One and the same Spirit is active in all these, distributing to each person as he wills."
We believe the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, infallible, and historically accurate Word of God. It is sufficient for guiding us in all matters of life and faith.
  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – "All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness."
  • Psalm 119:105 – "Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path."
  • Luke 1:1-4 – "Many have undertaken to compile a narrative about the events that have been fulfilled among us... so that you may know the certainty of the things about which you have been instructed."
We believe that God created the heavens, the earth, and all living things, declaring them "good." Humanity was made in God’s image to glorify Him.
  • Genesis 1:1 – "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
  • Genesis 1:27 – "So God created man in his own image; he created him in the image of God; he created them male and female."
  • Colossians 1:16 – "For everything was created by him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible... all things have been created through him and for him."
We believe all humans are created in God’s image but are born sinful and separated from God due to the fall. Sin is rebellion against God and results in both spiritual and physical death.
  • Genesis 3:6-7 – "Then the woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at... she took some of its fruit and ate it; she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it."
  • Romans 3:23 – "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
  • Ephesians 2:1-3 – "And you were dead in your trespasses and sins in which you previously lived according to the ways of this world."
We believe hell is a real, eternal separation from God, reserved for those who reject salvation in Jesus Christ.
  • Matthew 25:46 – "And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
  • Revelation 20:15 – "And anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire."
  • 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 – "When he takes vengeance with flaming fire on those who don’t know God and on those who don’t obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will pay the penalty of eternal destruction from the Lord’s presence and from his glorious strength."
  • Mark 9:47-48 – "And if your eye causes you to fall away, gouge it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched."
  • Daniel 12:2 – "Many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to eternal life, and some to disgrace and eternal contempt."
We believe salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone. Salvation includes justification, sanctification, and glorification.
  • Ephesians 2:8-9 – "For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift—not from works, so that no one can boast."
  • Romans 10:9 – "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
  • Acts 4:12 – "There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved."
We believe the Church is the body of Christ, called to worship, grow, and serve together. We are united in Him and empowered by the Holy Spirit to fulfill God’s mission.
  • 1 Corinthians 12:27 – "Now you are the body of Christ, and individual members of it."
  • Ephesians 4:11-13 – "To equip the saints for the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God’s Son, growing into maturity with a stature measured by Christ’s fullness."
  • Matthew 16:18 – "And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it."
  • Hebrews 10:24-25 – "And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching."
  • Acts 2:42-47 – "They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer... Every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved."
We believe Jesus will return to judge the living and the dead, bringing His kingdom in full. There will be a new heaven and a new earth, and believers will dwell eternally with God.
  • Acts 1:11 – "This same Jesus... will come in the same way that you have seen him going into heaven."
  • Revelation 21:1-4 – "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth... God’s dwelling is with humanity, and he will live with them."
  • 2 Corinthians 5:10 – "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may be repaid for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil."
  • 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 – "For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the archangel’s voice, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are still alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord."
  • John 14:2-3 – "In my Father’s house are many rooms; if not, I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you. If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also."
We believe our highest calling is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever by loving Him and others through worship, discipleship, and service.
  • Isaiah 43:1-2, 7 -- “Now this is what the Lord says — the one who created you, Jacob, and the one who formed you, Israel  — “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and the rivers will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, and the flame will not burn you. everyone who bears my name and is created for my glory. I have formed them; indeed, I have made them.””
  • Matthew 22:37-40 -- “He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.””
  • 1 Corinthians 10:31 -- “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.”

Nicene Creed

We affirm the Nicene Creed as a historic declaration of our faith:

"We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made. Who, for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. And we believe in one holy catholic* and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen."

*The word “catholic” means “relating to the church universal”

Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
[he descended to hell.]
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic* Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

*Southern Baptist theologian Timothy George explains, “When we say that we ‘believe in the holy catholic church,’ we are confessing that Jesus Christ himself is the church’s one foundation, that all who truly trust in him as Savior and Lord are by God’s grace members of this church, and that the gates of hell shall never prevail against it.”
